Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other's lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda's extraordinary personality. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. The Bus Boys are a musical ensemble from Winona MN comprised of three former school bus drivers (although one of them only lasted 2 weeks). One by one, they realized that bus driving was not their true calling in life. So they did the obvious thing: they became an acoustic jam trio. They all enjoyed music of The Grateful Dead, The Band, Bob Dylan, and the like, so they said, "Yes, we’ll play that kind of music." They also decided to mix in a substantial amount of bluegrass and folk-type music. A few original tunes have snuck in over the years. It has been distilled into a unique blend with their own twist on things. Since 1997, the Bus Boys have been: Mark Christensen, guitar, lead and harmony vocals; Wayne Beezley, mandolin, big mandolin, lead and harmony vocals; Dedrick Benz, bass and harmony vocals.

In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girlstraces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. Written with warmth and humor, Radium Girls is a fast-moving, highly theatrical ensemble piece for 9 to 10 actors, who play more than 30 parts—friends, co-workers, lovers, relatives, attorneys, scientists, consumer advocates, and myriad interested bystanders. Called a "powerful" and "engrossing" drama by critics, Radium Girls offers a wry, unflinching look at the peculiarly American obsessions with health, wealth, and the commercialization of science.

He has appeared at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Woody Guthrie Festival, and other venues backing Larry Long, sharing the stage with Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Peter Ostrushko, Debbie Duncan and Prudence Johnson.Larry has also recorded with Ariane Lydon, Lynn Biddick, Brian Sirchio, Hans Mayer, and Clay Riness.
Tommy Pfaff-5 String Banjo
Tommy Pfaff has been stuck on the banjo since he began chording Tin Pan Alley tunes on his Grandma's little old banjo uke. From those early Dixieland roots, sprang the Bluegrass style of banjo that Tommy has played and taught for over 30 years.Along the way, he has shared the stage with musicians of every stripe:country, rock, folk, blues, dixie, jazz, and polka.Despite these many years of experience and experiences, Tommy nonetheless has failed to learn how to play the banjo in even a remotely musical way.He has concluded, therefore that people take such an instant dislike to his banjo “music” because, well, “it just saves time”.
Wayne Beezley-Mandolin
Wayne Beezley grew up in Paonia, Colorado, where he started listening to bluegrass and old time music when he was about 11 years old. The family had an old “tater bug” style mandolin hanging on the wall, so Wayne got it down and started plunking around on it. He played with the Colorado based bluegrass band Monroe Doctrine, through which passed such notables as Charles Sawtelle, Danny Weiss, Tony Trischka, and Mark Hembree. Wayne moved to the Winona, MN area and expanded his musical horizons with the country-rock band North Country Band, and stretched out even further with a jam band called WEDG. He is comfortable in bluegrass, folk, swing, jazz, rock, jam, and whatever you want to throw at him. (Except hip-hop). Wayne currently plays with String Ties and the Bus Boys.
Dan Sebranek- Guitar
Dan Sebranek started playing four string banjo at the age of ten. His brother Larry was taking banjo lessons and encouraged Dan to pick up the instrument. Dan did pick up the banjo and other instruments thereafter. After a couple of years he switched to the electric guitar. There was always music around the Sebranek household. Dan’s father (Virgil Sebranek) played guitar. Dan picked up his dad’s guitar and started to learn Rock and Roll. At the age of fifteen, Dan started playing in a high school rock and roll band called Phoenix. They played live music at various local venues until 1980. His high school band mates all went their own ways after graduation. It was then Dan became more serious about playing music as a lifetime profession. He eventually added the acoustic guitar to his repertoire and began traveling across the nation. Dan spent three years traveling the road with Bill Miller. Later he became an integral part of several bluegrass/newgrass bands. Many of Dan’s friends have enjoyed experiencing the music of the Runaway acoustic duo that includes Johnsmith. Dan and John have several compact disc recordings after over ten years of concert venues together. John invited Dan on a musical tour of Ireland that remains unforgettable. Dan has also shared the stage with Hans Mayer and more recently recorded with Hans on his newest children’s album that encourages the use of green clean energy. These days you might find Dan playing a little rock and roll with his high school friends for a reunion. You might see him in concert with Johnsmith or Hans Mayer. He spends time with his musical friends (Mark Waelti and Randy Marsh) in Florida where you might hear a bit of Fogelberg or the faint sounds of Jimmy Buffet. Most of all Dan keeps the music of his Wisconsin family roots close to his heart in the bluegrass band STRING TIES.

Perry Fine Arts Series - LYRA
May 8, 2019
LYRA returns to the Perry Performing Arts Center stage on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at 7 p.m. The “a capella” program will consist of sacred music of the Russian Orthodox Church and Russian folk music with English commentary between songs.
Located in St. Petersburg, Russia, LYRA was founded in 1994 and is a community of about 25 professional musicians. Most of their members are students or postgraduates of St. Petersburg Conservatory working in different choirs of St. Petersburg. Some of them are also soloists at musical theaters of the city. Though the members of the community represent different musical professions: choir conductors, opera singers, instrumentalists, music teachers, they are all united by love for choir and ensemble singing. Due to different difficulties connected with the arrangement of concerts for such a numerous group, they usually perform in small groups consisting of 5-6 people, trying to keep the harmony of choir sound. In 2001 they were awarded the Montreux (Switzerland) international choral festival diploma. In 2005 the group was also a winner of Coleraine International Choral Festival (Northern Ireland). Aside from an annual tour of the U.S., LYRA ensembles also regularly perform in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Holland, Great Britain, Ireland and Sweden.
Come and enjoy an evening of beautiful music with Perry Fine Arts and learn a little about the Russian culture as well.
Fine Arts concerts are free (donations accepted) and open to all.

The Film: Welcome to Shelbyville
This powerful documentary focuses on a small Tennessee town in the heart of the Bible Belt as it grapples with discrimination in the face of changing demographics. Shelbyville’s long-time residents are challenged with how to best integrate the recent arrival of hundreds of Somali refugees of Muslim faith, hired by the local Tyson chicken-processing plant. As the town erupts in controversy, we hear from all parts of the community: Latino workers grappling with their own immigrant identity; longtime African American residents balancing perceived threats to their livelihood against the values they learned from their own civil rights struggles; the Somali refugees attempting to make new lives for their families and maintain their dignity in a hostile new land; and white civic and church leaders who are attempting to guide their congregations and citizens through a period of unprecedented change.
This program is moderated by Iowa State University Extension's Jon Wolseth. It features simultaneous, English- and Spanish-language screenings at two nearby venues: the Perry Performing Arts Center (English-language) and the Perry High School Library (Spanish-language). Both films begin at 2:00 pm and both venues are located at 1200 18th St. in Perry, IA. After the films, the groups will come together for a community discussion at the Perry Performing Arts Center. Spanish-language translators will be in attendance to help facilitate this discussion.
This event is free and open to the public.

Perry Fine Arts Series - Bus Boys Bluegrass Band
March 11, 2018 - 2:00 p.m.
The Perry Fine Arts Series will be presenting the Bus Boys Bluegrass Band in concert on March 11, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Perry Performing Arts Center,
The Bus Boys are a musical ensemble from Winona MN comprised of three former school bus drivers (although one of them only lasted 2 weeks).

Perry Fine Arts Series - Trio de Colores Mariachi Band
January 21, 2018 - 2:00 p.m.
The Perry Fine Arts Series will be presenting Trio de Colores Mariachi Band in concert on January 21, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Perry Performing Arts Center.
Trio de Colores, a trio based in Iowa and Latin America, specializes in Mexican music and is comprised of three virtuosic musicians who perform with various ensembles all over the United States and in Latin America. The trio's repertoire includes everything from well-known mariachi music to lesser known Native American tunes and contemporary Mexican folk music and popular compositions. Trio de Colores, or "Colorful Trio," has as its mission to expand awareness about the true diversity of Mexican music. The January 21 concert program will be a colorful sampler of short pieces that reflect primarily the Iberian influence on the popular music of Mexico, as illustrated by Mexican folk tunes such as “La Petenera” from the state of Veracruz, and “El Sinaloense” and “La Charreada” from the state of Jalisco, which all carry a European brand of harmonies in thirds and the rich string accompaniments first introduced from Spain: the harp, the guitarrón, and the vihuela all trace their roots to Europe. And yet, this is not European music, nor are the string instruments of Trio de Colores from Spain. Each piece carries a sound unique to Mexico, and all of the string instruments used by Trio de Colores were invented in the Americas. Musical ideas brought from Spain were only the starting point. The syncretism of European and Native traditions that led to cultures all their own in Mexico is palpable throughout the program. Of particular note is the waltz “María Chuchita,” sung in the Native Pur’épecha language, and the cumbia “El Mariachi Loco,” played to an Afro-Latin dance beat: they remind us very explicitly that Latin America is a land of mixed cultures with a unique voice in every region, depending on the particular blend that has taken place there.

In 1986, she married Tim Line, moved to Minneapolis and landed the perfect job, serenading shoppers at the piano for Dayton's department stores. Since then, Lorie has recorded 49 CDs and has published 46 books of music. Lorie has sold 6 million albums and may very well be the most published composer/arranger in our lifetime. She has 800,000 active Lorie Line Radio listeners on Pandora and her music "spins" almost two million times a week. She has toured the United States for 27 consecutive years, performing on over 2000 stages. Lorie has never taken one business course, but may own one of the largest independent labels in the world. She continues to be the hardest working woman in show biz, touring and performing 60 to 80 concerts each year.
Over the years, Lorie has produced three television specials for PBS. She has played (and cooked) for Congressmen, Senators and Governors. She has performed for two Presidents at the White House. Her grass roots story has been published in hundreds of news articles and her beautiful home has been featured in numerous national magazines. Her dresses have been showcased in museums and she may own one of the largest private costume collections in the country.
This past October she celebrated 30 years of marriage to her business partner, Tim (alias Santa). Over the years they have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charities. They have two adult children and are now empty nesters.
Come and enjoy an evening of beautiful holiday music as Lorie and her Pop Chamber Orchestra take the stage of the Perry Performing Arts Center.

(Please note day and time change from our usual schedule)
The Perry Fine Arts Series will be presenting the Iowa Statesmen in concert on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in Perry Performing Arts Center.
The Iowa Statesmen, Iowa State’s popular men’s choir, was formed by its conductor, Dr. James Rodde, in 2000. The choir specializes in the performance of traditional and contemporary male chorus literature. The group has an annual membership of 150 singers, of which 95% are non-music majors. Virtually every college and academic discipline in the University is represented in the choir. The choir’s mission is to give each of its members the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of singing together, to develop an awareness of healthy vocal production, and to promote participation in choral music.
The Statesmen tour regionally every year and in 2006 performed at the IMC National Convention in Eau Claire, WI. In addition to their own concerts, the group joins the other Iowa State choirs annually for the Holiday Concert in December and the Masterworks Concert in April, where this year they will sing the Mozart Requiem, Levin edition.
James Rodde, Endowed Chair and Director of Choral Activities at Iowa State University, Ames, conducts the Iowa State Singers, the 150-voice Iowa Statesmen, teaches choral conducting and literature, and oversees a program of roughly 400 undergraduate choristers. His choirs have toured internationally and have been honored with performances at five ACDA and two NCCO national conferences. An active clinician, he has led numerous festival ensembles, including more than a dozen All-State and divisional ACDA honor choirs. This March he will conduct the Mississippi All-State Choir. Beyond his university duties, Dr. Rodde is the Artistic Director of the Des Moines Choral Society. For more than a decade he served ACDA as the North Central R&S Chair for Men’s Choirs, and he continues to edit and arrange choral music, with a number of published works.
The program in Perry will include a variety of compositions and arrangements by Copland, Lauridsen, Stroope, Wilberg, Richard Burchard, Stephen Chatman, Joseph Martin, and others.

The Man Who Came to Dinner
Perry High School Drama Department
November 4 & 5, 2016
Perry High School Drama Department presents The Man Who Came to Dinner by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, on November 4 & 5, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Perry High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets to The Man Who Came to Dinner will be on sale soon in the High School office
Sheridan Whiteside, having dined at the home of the Stanleys, slips on their doorstep, breaking his hip. A tumultuous six weeks of confinement follow. The Stanley living room is monopolized by the irascible invalid; ex-convicts are invited to meals; and transatlantic calls bring a $784 phone bill. The arrival of strange gifts from his friends further destroys domestic tranquility. It would take a stoical housewife to harbor penguins in her library, an octopus in her cellar, and 10,000 cockroaches in her kitchen. When Maggie, his secretary, falls in love with the reporter, Bert Jefferson, Whiteside summons a glamorous actress, Lorraine, to win the affections of the young man. Knowing the girl's charms, Maggie enlists the aid of a clever impersonator who, affecting the voice of Lord Bottomley, whom the actress hopes to marry, asks her by phone to return to him and be married. The ruse almost works, but Whiteside, becoming suspicious, finds that no calls have come through from London. In revenge, Lorraine suggests a three-week rewrite on a play of Bert's in which she feigns great interest. Lake Placid is to furnish the quiet for his inspiration, and she is to be his collaborator. The unexpected arrival of a mummy case, just as the relenting Whiteside is frantically seeking to get rid of Lorraine, furnishes a malicious idea. Tricking her into stepping into the case, he shuts the lid and blackmails his host into having the case carried to the airport, preparatory to a round-the-world cruise. Whiteside departs from the Stanley's home triumphantly, but a second later a crash is heard—he has again slipped and fallen!

I.S.U. Musica Antiqua
April 10, 2016
The Perry Fine Arts Series will be presenting Musica Antiqua on April 10, 2016 at 2:00 pm in the Perry Performing Arts Center.
Since 1967, when this unique ensemble was formed at Iowa State University, Musica Antiqua has helped bring early music, song, and dance to crowds across Iowa, the Midwest and beyond.
“Musica Antiqua” is a diverse group of performers recreating the music of the Renaissance and Middle Ages on their collection of 12th to 17th century replica instruments. This unique ensemble was formed in 1967 at Iowa State University to help bring early music and song to the Midwest and beyond.
Carl Bleyle, director of the group, started almost 50 years ago with three authentic musical instruments. Alan Spohnheimer and Dee Dreeszen have been musicians in the group since the beginning. Along with musician Steve Kelleher, the group plays for convention, schools classes, Renaissance fairs and madrigal dinners.
There are roughly 100 instruments in their collection spanning from the 12th to 17th centuries and include a wide range of wind and string instruments. The group has a collection of eight recorders, each made in a different size to create different notes. Some of the group’s instruments are the only ones in the country such as a small intricately decorated and carved pipe organ called an organetto. While the instruments are not original pieces used during the Renaissance or Middle Ages, each piece is designed as an authentic replica of original instruments now held in museums. The group has realistic European costumes and strive for an authentic feel in the instruments which are made out of the best of woods sycamore, maple, walnut. The group also tries to teach audiences more about the instruments by explaining the backstory of their names, and even some familiar instruments have a story behind them.
Come and learn more about music and instruments from the Middle Ages.
This concert is free and open to the public.

"At first the Sycamores seem mad, but it is not long before we realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder. In contrast to these delightful people are the unhappy Kirbys. The plot shows how Tony, attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong evening. The shock sustained by the Kirbys, who are invited to eat cheap food, shows Alice that marriage with Tony is out of the question. The Sycamores, however, though sympathetic to Alice, find it hard to realize her point of view. Meantime, Tony, who knows the Sycamores are right and his own people wrong, will not give her up, and in the end Mr. Kirby is converted to the happy madness of the Sycamores, particularly since he happens in during a visit by an ex-Grand Duchess, earning her living as a waitress. No mention has as yet been made of the strange activities of certain members of the household engaged in the manufacture of fireworks; nor of the printing press set up in the parlor; nor of Rheba the maid and her friend Donald; nor of Grandpa's interview with the tax collector when he tells him he doesn't believe in the income tax.
Come and enjoy an evening of comedy as the Kirby's and Sycamore's face off in this clash of classes as the PHS Drama Department presents You Can't Take It With You in the Perry Performing Arts Center.

Perry Fine Arts Series
Des Moines Metropolitan Opera March 11, 2016 The Perry Fine Arts Series will be presenting OPERA Iowa (educational division of the Des Moines Metropolitan Opera) in their production of Rossini's "Cinderella" on Friday, March 11, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. in the Perry Performing Arts Center. OPERA Iowa will complement their Friday evening performance of “Cinderella” with exciting school-day performance of “Billy Goats Gruff” and classroom workshops at the Perry Middle School that will entertain and educate in an effort to make opera more understandable and more accessible to students and families. The opera is performed in English with colorful scenery and costumes, theatrical lighting, and musical accompaniment. In Rossini’s version of Cinderella, the evil stepmother is replaced by a grumpy stepfather, and the fairy godmother is replaced by a philosopher, but the iconic glass slipper and ornery stepsisters remain. Rossini’s version of the classic-fairy tale Cinderella is a vocal and comedic romp! A wise magician takes the place of the fairy godmother and the girl’s father rants and raves instead of a wicked stepmother, but the nasty stepsisters, Prince Charming and a glass slipper prove, beyond all question, that this is the fairy tale we all know and love. And when it’s combined with hilarious characters and situations and set to some of Rossini’s finest music, it becomes comic opera at its most exhilarating best! The Billy Goats Gruff takes a familiar tale and adds a fun operatic twist with a strong anti-bullying message. On the way home from school, three little billy goats encounter a steep bridge, a big mean troll and a sticky situation that they must try to solve—all set to some of the greatest music by Mozart, Rossini and Donizetti! For 30 years OPERA Iowa has created magic -- in rural schools, city classrooms, "cafetoriums," community centers, concert halls and gymnasiums -- offering nearly 750,000 young people and adults a quality arts experience today while building new enthusiastic audiences for opera tomorrow. One of the most innovative programs of its kind in the country, this successful 13-week regional arts education tour features comprehensive study guides and curriculum-based education workshops as well as performances designed especially for young people. The nine-member OPERA Iowa Troupe are young professionals whose sole goal is to captivate their audiences. This concert is free and open to the public. Get Smart
November 6 & 7, 2015
Perry High School Drama Department presents Get Smart by Mel Brooks (adapted by Christopher Sergel), on November 6 & 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the Perry High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets to Get Smart will be on sale beginning Wednesday, October 28, 2015 in the High School office. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students.
"Would you believe that seven police boats are closing in on us right now?" asks Maxwell Smart of the head of KAOS who now holds him captive. When the master criminal finds this a little hard to accept, the straight-faced Smart asks, "Would you believe six?" With that question, this bright comedy-satire put an expression into the language. Smart is off on a bizarre new case in which he must stop the sinister organization known as KAOS from their most shameful plot. Their plan this time is to prove their power by blowing up the Statue of Liberty! This is too much, and Smart springs, or perhaps we should say stumbles, into action. Magnificently assisted by beautiful Agent 99, Smart proceeds from one gigantic blunder to another, each, however, somehow turning into a master stroke. In our opinion, this is the ultimate spoof of all secret agent thrillers. It's filled visual surprises that make the show exciting and enjoyable for everyone.
Come and enjoy an evening of comedy as Maxwell Smart blunders his way around the Perry Performing Arts Center as the PHS Drama Department presents Get Smart.

Altar Egos
April 10 & 11, 2015
Perry High School Drama Department presents Altar Egos by Pat Cook on April 10 & 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Perry High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets to Altar Egos are now on sale at the high school office. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults.
The I Do's and Don'ts of an American Wedding "All we want is a simple wedding," agree Mark and Colleen as they get engaged. Their simple wedding stays simple, for about two minutes. Then the families get involved. There's the McMasters, who think the Frobishers are a bunch of snooty dudes, and the Frobishers, who picture the McMasters as a crowd of hillbillies. The bride's father keeps offering the soon-to-be-wed couple thousands of dollars to elope, "No questions asked!" The bride's mother decides to call in her sister, who is a sweet, lovely woman, until she becomes "The Coordinator, " a drill sergeant! The groom needs a best man so he enlists his Uncle Josh, who's an old hippie. The bride's kid sister can't wait for the wedding, either, since she gets the bride's old room, if she can talk Dad out of it, who wants it for a den, if he can talk Mom out of it, who wants it for a quilting room. The two mothers are literally dueling over the rehearsal dinner seating chart while the bride and groom wonder where it all went wrong. Throw into this mix football referees, tailors, circus ringmasters, caterers and even an interpreter and you get just some of the "Altar Egos."
Come and enjoy an evening of comedy and a wedding gone awry as the PHS Drama Department presents Altar Egos.
